Highlights The MBBS programme at Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital (CNMC&H) is a 5.5-year, full-time medical degree that blends strong theoretical learning with extensive clinical immersion from one of Kolkata’s busiest government hospitals. The course begins with foundational subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, giving students a clear understanding of human structure and function. This progresses into para-clinical areas like Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine and Community Medicine, helping students connect disease processes with diagnostics and treatment. The later years are deeply clinical—students rotate through Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology and more, gaining hands-on exposure to both routine and complex cases. By the time students reach the compulsory internship year, they are already comfortable with ward duties, patient management and emergency care, preparing them for real-world medical practice or postgraduate pathways.
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital
The MBBS curriculum at CNMC&H spans 4.5 years of structured academic instruction followed by a mandatory one-year rotating internship. Students begin with the pre-clinical phase, where they develop a scientific understanding of the human body. This leads into the para-clinical phase, which introduces them to laboratory sciences, pathology, therapeutics, microbes and public health systems. The final and most extended phase is clinical training, where students learn through fundamental patient interactions in outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, emergency rooms, operating theatres and speciality units.
Teaching methods include lectures, dissections, practical sessions, demonstrations, seminars, bedside clinics, ward rounds and case presentations. During the internship, students rotate across Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Community Medicine, and allied specialities. This year-long, supervised hands-on training ensures students gain confidence, procedural skills, diagnostic capability and clinical judgement essential for independent medical practice.
