About St. Xavier's College (Autonomous)
Tracing its roots back to November 1859, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, began with a small band of seven Belgian Jesuits led by Fr. H. Depelchin. What started in the halls of the former Sans Souci Theatre in 1860 has blossomed into one of India’s most prestigious educational landmarks—a "tiny seed" that truly grew into a "mighty tree."
A Legacy of Excellence
The history of the institution is punctuated by remarkable leaders. Fr. E. Lafont, a brilliant physics teacher, became a local hero in 1864 when his scientific foresight allowed him to signal a warning before a devastating cyclone, saving countless lives. Later, it was Fr. O’Neill who gave the community its identity through the college crest and the motto Nihil Ultra ("Nothing Beyond"). This spirit is captured in the Xaverian maxim: “Nothing is perfect as long as anything remains to be done,” a reminder to always strive for more.
