About Loyola College (Autonomous)
Loyola College, a Catholic minority school run by the Jesuits, began in 1925 to offer university education in a Christian setting for all deserving students, no matter their background. It opened its doors that July with just 75 students taking classes in Mathematics, History, and Economics.
Though linked to the University of Madras, the college gained autonomy in 1978, letting it create its own courses, teaching styles, and exam methods—while students still earn university degrees. In 2004, the UGC named it a "College with Potential for Excellence," renewed in 2010, and later upgraded it to "College of Excellence" from 2014 to 2019. NAAC gave it a strong 3.70 out of 4.00 score in 2012.
Today, Loyola offers 19 undergraduate and 19 postgraduate programs in arts, sciences, and commerce, plus 12 special institutes serving over 12,000 students. Eleven departments run M.Phil. programs, 12 offer PhDs, and more than 40% of its 286 faculty hold doctorates, supported by 182 non-teaching staff.
