About Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies
The Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies (BILS) has a rich history, having been established in 1993 during the Golden Jubilee celebration of its parent body, BHS HES. The institute was formally inaugurated by Shri. B.V. Acharya, who was the Advocate General of the Government of Karnataka at the time, and was initially led by its first Principal, Shri. G.Y. Subba Rao. A key period of growth and development began with the arrival of Prof. S.S. Alur in 1996, a retired Professor of Law from Karnataka University, whose exceptional insight and expertise significantly elevated the institution's standing before he was designated as Director. Leadership continued with Smt. C.S. Kanthi, followed by the highly experienced Prof. S.B. Jatti in 2001, who successfully guided BILS to achieve great heights and establish a strong presence among law colleges nationwide until his retirement in 2013. The college was subsequently led by Dr. Sapna S from 2013, an accomplished academic with a First Class, First Rank in her B.A. (Law) and LL.B., and a Doctorate from NLSIU, Bangalore. Currently, the institute is led by Smt. Preeti S. Desai since May 2017, a dedicated professional who secured the 3rd Rank in her LL.M. from Karnataka University and is continuously working towards positioning BILS as one of the best law schools in India.
