About Stella Maris College
Stella Maris College is a well-known women’s college located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is an autonomous institution affiliated with the University of Madras and functions as a minority institution under the management of the Society of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. The college offers a supportive learning environment, with partial residential facilities through five hostels: Snehalaya, Our Lady’s, Klemens, St. Joseph’s, and Nava Nirmana. In recognition of its academic quality, Stella Maris College was ranked 30th among colleges in India by NIRF 2024.
Established on 15 August 1947 with just 32 students in a small one-storey building, the college has grown significantly over the decades. Today, it serves over 5,500 students on its spacious campus known as The Cloisters, located on Cathedral Road, Chennai. Granted autonomous status in 1987, the college now offers 19 undergraduate and 12 postgraduate programs, along with research opportunities such as M.Phil., Ph.D., and postgraduate diploma courses, reflecting its strong focus on academic excellence and research-driven education.
