The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology was established in 1987 as the Regional Engineering College. It was granted the status of a National Institute of Technology (Deemed University) by the Government of India on 17 October 2002, under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi. The college was designated as an Institute of National Importance in 2007 by an Act of Parliament.
