About us
The city of Aurangabad is in the centre of the Marathwada region, which was under Nizam's rule until 1948; Deogiri College was founded there in 1960. Following the linguistic redistribution of states, Marathwada became a division of the state of Maharashtra in 1956. Two years hence, the Marathwada Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was established, transforming the course of Marathwada’s history. It was more than an institution; it was a movement to carry the light of knowledge to those who had for centuries sat in the shadow of neglect. The Mandal was given birth through the insight efforts of Mr. V.R. Sawant, Mr. Vinayakrao Patil and a dedicated team of enlightened social reformers.
Inspired by its motto, “Duritanche timir jawo” (Let the darkness of ignorance be driven away), the institute aimed to overcome the obstacles of the March backwaters to enlightenment under centuries of oppression. Freedom had aroused new hopes in the minds of the masses, and the establishment of this educational movement formed part of the grand national march for progress and honour.
Such was the vision behind the birth of Deogiri College, which had the noble objective of taking higher education to the rural masses. It wasn’t a narrow academic pursuit; it was the hunt for identity and power. The area was the land of the Yadav dynasty (king likes Yadava) in Deogiri Fort. It had become degenerate; this college came as a step of progress in this fallen area. Company Rocked by the martial mission of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and inculcated in tradition to make justice and equality available to the deprived and the needy, Deogiri College devoted itself to realising the cause of the deprived economically and the suppressed socially.
