About us
The IIT concept was first proposed in a 1945 report by N.M. Sircar, a member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council, recommended the establishment of technical institutes across India. Following this, the first IIT was founded in Kharagpur in 1950, with further institutes set up through collaborations with countries willing to assist. The USSR collaborated on IIT Bombay through UNESCO, followed by Germany at Madras, the USA at Kanpur, and the UK at Delhi. IIT Guwahati was later established in 1995, and the University of Roorkee became an IIT in 2001. For IIT Delhi, initial negotiations with the British led to a modest start as the College of Engineering & Technology, with the foundation laid by Prince Philip in 1959 and formal opening in 1961. Initially affiliated with the University of Delhi, IIT Delhi evolved into an autonomous statutory body under the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961. According to the Act, each IIT is a corporate body with a perpetual seal, governed by a Board of Governors comprising a Chairman, Director, and Board members. IIT Delhi’s Board oversees general operations through various committees, including Finance and Building & Works. The Senate controls academic standards, curricula, and examinations, forming subcommittees to address specific academic needs. This governance ensures IIT Delhi maintains educational quality and fulfills its mandate as a leading technical institution. Additionally, IIT Delhi is approved by the AICTE, accredited by the NBA, and recognized by NAAC.
