Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Thevara, Kochi, established in 1944 by the CMI Congregation at the Sacred Heart Monastery, began rather modestly with intermediate and degree programmes in Commerce, Mathematics, and Economics under the University of Madras. Over time, it affiliated with Kerala University in 1958 and later with Mahatma Gandhi University in 1983, gradually expanding both its academic depth and physical footprint. Founded by Rev. Fr. John Berchmans CMI and Rev. Fr. Francis Sales CMI, the institution evolved into a prominent co-educational college after admitting women in 1981 — a shift that meaningfully broadened its academic community.
Today, Sacred Heart College offers 21 undergraduate programmes, 20 postgraduate programmes, one integrated PG course, along with several diploma and certificate programmes across its three campuses — Lakeview (Main Campus), East Campus, and the Media Campus. Under the leadership of Principal Dr. Biju C.S. / Fr. Jose John CMI, the college continues to balance tradition with academic innovation. Among its contemporary offerings, the BCA degree course provides structured training in computer applications, programming, database systems, and emerging digital technologies. With practical lab sessions, project work, and exposure to real-world applications, the programme caters to students aiming to build careers in the IT and software sectors while benefiting from the college’s established academic culture.
A pioneer in Kerala’s higher education landscape, Sacred Heart College introduced the state’s first MSW programme in 1961 and later established multiple PhD research centres, beginning with Botany in 1990. By 2020, the college had produced over 120 doctoral graduates. It has also earned notable recognitions, including consecutive R. Sankar awards (1997 and 1999) and several MG University sports championships — a reminder that campus life here extends well beyond classrooms.
Accreditations and rankings further reflect its academic standing: NAAC Five Star status in 2000, A Grade re-accreditations in 2007 and 2013, and recognition as a UGC College with Potential for Excellence (2004–2019), supported by grants amounting to ₹3 crore. Granted autonomous status in 2014, the college has continued to strengthen its academic profile, ranking #24 in Outlook 2024 and #31 in India Today 2024. Departments such as Computer Science (established in 2001), Environmental Studies, and Management contribute to a forward-looking academic environment that still feels grounded in its long-standing values and heritage.
