Asansol Engineering College, a self-financing institute, was established in 1998 under the Society of The Academy of Engineers (India). The college is approved by AICTE, New Delhi and the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, affiliated to WBUT, West Bengal, and recognized by UGC under section 2(f) of the UGC Act (1956). While it is widely known for engineering and technical education, students exploring options beyond traditional engineering often also compare it with leading BCA colleges in Kolkata, especially when looking at computer-related programs like Computer Science, IT, and MCA.
The college started with four departments and 180 students. Today, it offers seven streams of B.Tech courses—Electronics and Communication Engineering, Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering—along with three master’s degree courses: M.Tech in Electrical Engineering, M.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering, and Master of Computer Application.
The institute received an “AA” award from a reputed magazine through a survey of Engineering Colleges in East and Northeast India. Spread across around 17 acres, the campus supports more than 3,000 students with over 200 faculty members and lab assistants, four multistoried academic buildings, separate multistoried hostels for boys and girls, more than 150 classrooms and laboratories, individual seminar rooms for each department, and 24-hour internet facilities.
The college aims to enhance postgraduate education and research & development programs by working toward academic autonomy. To achieve this, it plans to restructure its curriculum to make it flexible, learner-centric, and industry-oriented. It believes that academic excellence is the need of the hour, and initially focuses on strengthening existing PG programs, followed by introducing more disciplines at the postgraduate level. Alongside this, the institute gives importance to doctoral research, with special emphasis on collaborative research with other institutions and industries. Being close to industrial zones, the college also plans to benefit from testing and consultancy work, helping it sustain reforms and move forward steadily.
