About Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth (TMV)
Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth was established in 1921, following an idea by Mahatma Gandhi in the Indian National Congress session at Nagpur in 1920. It was founded to commemorate the work of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, also known as ‘The Father of Indian Unrest’ and he a proponent for national education. Tilak’s concept of national educational was one his four principles (the other 3 were Swaraj, Swadeshi and Boycott).
Since the inception of the Vidyapeeth, it initiated a nationwide long-term national programme and conducted it through its associated colleges and institutions. It offered instruction in Arts, Science, Commerce and Ayurveda with emphasis on Indian culture applicable Sanskrit. There was preference to teach in Marathi, which was a step towards the type of education system at that time.
Vidyapeeth and its pupils actively participated in the freedom struggle right from 1930-32 Non-Cooperation Movement to Quit India Movement of 1942. On account of these operations its working was interrupted for awhile, but with the assistance of patriots it fought its way through and held to itself. The university came to be recognised for the patriotic youth education during the pre-independence period.
In the last several decades, Vidyapeeth has established a well-built academic and administrative setup with its Statutory authorities like Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and Registrar in place along with various statutory bodies such as Board of Management, Academic Council, Planning & Monitoring Board and Finance Committee. Some of the established scholars and leaders have been Chancellors namely - Rediscovery Kher, Shri Y.B. Chavan, S.B.Chavan, Shivraj Patil and Sushilkumar Shinde.
