CHRIST (Deemed to be University) was established with the educational vision of St Kuriakose Elias Chavara — a 19th-century South Indian priest, social reformer, and pioneering educationist. He founded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) in 1831, the very congregation that continues to manage CHRIST University today. Rooted in a legacy of service and education, the university carries forward his mission with dedication and purpose.
Originally founded as Christ College in 1969, the institution became known for introducing modern, forward-thinking academic practices long before they became the norm in Indian higher education. With a strong focus on discipline, holistic learning, and a global approach to teaching, it quickly gained recognition for its progressive approach, including programs like the MCA Degree Course. The University Grants Commission (UGC) granted autonomy in 2004 and later declared it a Deemed to be University in 2008 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Recognized as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006, CHRIST has also consistently maintained top NAAC accreditations — most recently achieving an ‘A+’ Grade in 2022.
