About National Law University (NLU)

The University aims to develop and offer comprehensive, integrated and inter-disciplinary courses in the field of legal education that are forward looking incorporating the latest developments in law and research. By this education, we hope to inculcate a respect for law and establish the rule of law and the goals as embedded in the Constitution of India. The University is also committed to promoting legal knowledge and its relationship with national development so that the capacity for analyzing, presenting public issues of contemporary interest and their legal implications from a public interest perspective among the masses increases. These processes aim to improve legal consciousness in society and realize political, social, and economic justice.

The liberalization process we began in the early 90s, many argue, unleashed India’s potential. Of course the country has changed beyond all recognition in other areas and gone on to become a more assertive India on the global platform. But this has come with some very big challenges for the country. India’s social strata have yet to congeal; their inclusion in the governance process is fragmented. There is fairness in cumulative progress. And at the heart of that is that system of law which allows the marginalized to assert themselves and reason with them as equals, recognizes justice not only in letter but in spirit and above all does not use the law as an instrument of oppression.

Ours is a genuine effort to convert legal education into justice education as a means of transforming society – politically, socially and economically. Every single individual associated with this institution should be remembered as a fighter for social justice.” Our students will not only contribute for becoming a change-agent when the country is to attain its social and developmental objectives but also meet the challenges of the new millennium and become guardians of Constitution of India.
