Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS)
Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), launched as an autonomous public institution on November 20, 2010, operates under the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies Act, 2010. Following Notification No.19540/Leg.I1/2010/Law dated January 28, 2011, the Kerala Government enacted Act 5 of 2011 to establish KUFOS. As India's pioneering fisheries university under the Kerala State Ministry of Fisheries, it absorbed the College of Fisheries in Panangad—one of the nation's 19 fisheries colleges—and the Fisheries Station in Puduveypu from Kerala Agricultural University via G.O. (P) No. 510/F & PD dated May 10, 2011, effective April 1, 2011. KUFOS serves as Kerala's key hub for building human resources, skills, and technology to drive sustainable growth in fisheries and ocean studies, acting as a center of excellence for training, a bridge to global institutions, and a promoter of world-class education focused on research and impactful extension work. It nurtures top-tier technocrats through expert faculty, robust infrastructure, and strong ties to leading national and international organizations, delivering graduate and postgraduate programs in vital fisheries disciplines to meet state and national needs while channeling research innovations to grassroots communities.
KUFOS spans the entire state of Kerala, with its headquarters in Kochi's Ernakulam district—a striking blue building amid greenery at Panangad, 12 km from the city along NH-47—covering 75 acres, plus 50 acres of brackishwater and marine sites at Puduveypu on Vypin Island and 10 acres at Thiruvallam in Thiruvananthapuram. The university's mission centers on flagship excellence in teaching, research, extension, training, and innovation in fisheries and ocean studies, aligning with global benchmarks to benefit India and beyond. The Governor of Kerala holds the role of Chancellor, the Fisheries Minister serves as Pro-Chancellor, and the Governing Council acts as the primary executive authority. The Vice Chancellor leads as the chief officer, supported by the Pro Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Deans, Controller of Examinations, Finance Officer, Director of Research, Director of Extension, School Directors, and Department Heads.
