About Madras School of Social Work (MSSW)
How it Started The Madras School of Social Work (MSSW) was founded in 1952 in Chennai. It was the very first college of its kind in South India and only the fourth in the entire country. Today, it’s a highly respected, autonomous institution affiliated with the University of Madras. It is currently ranked as the 4th best social work college in India, a testament to its long history of leadership and academic excellence.
The Woman Behind It: Mary Clubwala Jadhav The school exists because of the vision of Mary Clubwala Jadhav. Born in 1908 into a wealthy Parsi family, she was raised with a deep sense of compassion. Her journey into serious social work began in 1937 with the Guild of Service.
During World War II, she went above and beyond to support the troops. She organized mobile canteens and hospital visits, earning her the nickname "The Darling of the Army" from General Cariappa. The 14th Army even gifted her a Japanese sword to thank her for her incredible bravery and effort.
A Life of Service After the war, Mary didn't slow down. She launched dozens of projects to help the community, including:
Her Legacy Mary’s most lasting achievement was founding MSSW to train future generations of social workers. Her work was recognized globally with an "Outstanding Service Award" in the Hague and nationally with the Padma Shri from the Indian government.
When she passed away in 1975, even Prime Minister Indira Gandhi remarked that India had lost one of its greatest social workers. Today, MSSW continues her mission, staying connected with global social work associations and maintaining its spot as a top-tier institution.
