Though initially planned as a tertiary referral centre, our reputation for quality care now draws over half a million patients annually from across India and neighboring countries, demonstrating a reach that has far surpassed our original mandate.
NIMHANS is committed to providing holistic healthcare, seamlessly blending modern medicine with traditional therapeutic systems. We house nearly 20 specialized clinics focused on disease-specific, patient-centric treatment. Our NABH-accredited hospital boasts 1000 beds and features state-of-the-art inpatient care, advanced rehabilitation services, and comprehensive diagnostic and laboratory services—all of which are now NABL accredited. Key facilities include round-the-clock emergency and neurosurgical units for head injuries, and the expansive seven-floor Sub-Speciality Block, which has 125 beds and sophisticated operation theatres ready to tackle the most complex neurological and neurosurgical challenges. Beyond the central campus, we extend our impact through the Sakalwara Community Mental Health Centre and the NIMHANS Centre for Well Being, with plans to further expand with a new polytrauma centre in Kyalasanahalli.
Our commitment to advancing knowledge is evident in our vast and varied research initiatives, which follow a "bench to bedside to community" approach through collaborations with major agencies worldwide. Our research covers an incredible spectrum, from addiction and Alzheimer's to imaging, deep brain stimulation, stroke research, and molecular genetics. As the country's leading post-graduate training centre in these specialties, we offer over 90 courses, including M.Ch, DM, MD, MPhil, MSc, and doctoral programs. We actively conduct numerous capacity building programs for healthcare practitioners and policymakers, ensuring that our expertise adds value to the broader health system and ultimately improves patient outcomes.
NIMHANS plays a pivotal role in shaping national health policy and programming in India. We were the driving force behind the Government of India's flagship District Mental Health Programme, which originated from the successful Bellary model of care we piloted. We remain central to strategizing and revolutionizing both institutional and community-based mental health services. Our major contributions include the formulation of the National Mental Health Policy and championing rights-based mental healthcare. Most recently, we were designated as the nodal centre for the ambitious Tele MANAS (Tele Mental Health Assistance and Nationally Actionable Plan) program, further demonstrating our leadership in innovative service delivery. Recognizing our pre-eminent stature and remarkable growth since 1980, the Union Government declared us a ‘Deemed University’ in 1994 and later conferred the distinguished status of an ‘Institute of National Importance’ in 2012.
