Highlights A Master of Surgery (MS) is a postgraduate academic degree awarded to medical graduates who have completed advanced training and education in surgical specialties. MS program focuses on advanced training and education in surgical techniques, procedures, and practices within a specific surgical specialty. Common surgical specialties include general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, urology, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology (ENT). The curriculum includes both theoretical coursework and extensive clinical training in surgical procedures, patient care, and perioperative management. Clinical training is a significant component of an MS program, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in surgical settings under the supervision of experienced surgeons.
About us
The Christian Medical College is an unaided, non-captitation, Christian minority educational institution admitting students on merit on an all-India basis. The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore was established and is maintained by the Christian Medical College Vellore Association, a registered society, formed by over 50 different Indian Christian churches and Christian organisations which run over 225 hospitals, health centres and dispensaries throughout the length and breadth of this country, many of which are situated in remote rural areas. The purpose of the Christian Medical College, therefore, is to train dedicated persons to manage, run and provide health care in the spirit of Christ through the mission hospitals. The motto of the institution is: “Not To Be Ministered Unto, But To Minister” In 2018, the Christian Medical College Vellore proudly celebrated the completion of a hundred years of Medical Education, which began in 1918, bringing to fruition the dream of our visionary founder, Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder.
Programme Outcome & Approaches
Master of Surgery is based around developing higher level skills and surgical knowledge in areas of interest, eg., General Surgery, Orthopaedics, (ear, nose and throat surgery) and Ophthalmology etc. It is an unique and broad based specialized programme that opens pathways to a broader spectrum of professional surgical practice and training beyond that contained in specialist surgical training runs at RACS. Those who complete it are trained to diagnose complicated health conditions, skillfully conduct medical treatment s and provide follow-up care. They are being trained as general conditioned consultants, hospital-based surgeons, academicians and researchers in their selected field.
The MS program strategy is a blending of intense didactic and apprenticeship experiences in surgery and clinical activities. Students gain experience through rotations at hospitals, exposure to the operating room, and well-supervised procedures that develop their judgment and technical capacity. They are trained in advance surgical procedures, patient safety measures and the latest in surgical technology. The program incorporates research, case studies, and academic seminars to promote evidence-based practices and innovation. Upon completion of the course, MS graduates aren't just trained to do surgeries but are qualified to lead a team of operation as well as educate aspiring medical professionals and aid in the development of medical research.
