The institute is a part of family Rayat Shikshan Sanstha which is a well known educational trust of Maharastra state established by Late Padmbhushan Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil. The school, established in June 1958 as a Science wing of Chh. Shivaji College Satara, was in fact set up as an independent 'Science College' on 15 June 1965. Yashavantrao Chavan Institute of Science was named in honour of Late Shri. Yashavantrao Balawantrao Chavan the former Deputy Prime Minister of India & Ex. Aspired to be successful continous achievements in academic, extra curricular and social performance on institution level, enabled it to get accreditated at A level and re-accerdited at A level with higher grades points 3.37 by NAAC, Banglore. The Institute was nominated as 'College with Potential for Excellence' by UGC, New Delhi and for FIST (FUNDS for IMPROVEMENT IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY) by DST New Delhi. The institute is recognized as STAR college by DBT, New Delhi.
