About Veterinary College
The Veterinary College, Bangalore, established on July 25, 1958, by the then Honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri. B.D. Jatti, began its journey at the Mysore Serum Institute before relocating to its expansive 196-acre present campus in 1962, inaugurated by His Highness the Maharaja Shri Jaya Chamarajendra Wodeyar. The institution saw several affiliations, becoming a constituent college of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore in 1965, and subsequently integrating into the Karnataka Veterinary Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) in 2004, marking a history that included its Golden Jubilee celebration from 2007 to 2008. The central mission of the college is teaching, research, and extension, specifically aiming to ensure veterinary education remains relevant to the needs of society and the aspirations of livestock farmers by producing highly skilled and competent manpower ready to meet new challenges. To achieve this, the college features nineteen well-equipped departments with highly qualified staff, offering the BVSc & AH program according to Veterinary Council of India regulations, alongside Masters and Doctoral programs in various disciplines, all supported by advanced facilities, including well-equipped hospitals in Hebbal and Yelahanka, and an instructional farm with dairy, sheep, piggery, and poultry units. The institution takes pride in its global impact, having produced approximately 4,000 veterinary graduates and over 1,200 postgraduates who have excelled across renowned institutes like IISc and IVRI, with its reputation attracting students from over a dozen foreign countries for academic purposes. Furthermore, the college has made significant contributions to the farming community, notably by developing the Giriraja and Swarnadhara poultry breeds, which have become an icon for backyard farming, and it plays a vital role in global health by collaborating with foreign institutions and actively controlling communicable diseases transferred from animals to humans.
