B.A. in Psychology is a full-time three-year course as per Osmania University’s curriculum. In the first year, students learn the foundations: what psychology is, an overview of different schools of thought, stages of human development from infancy to adulthood, and how people perceive and process information. Once they get into the second and third years, their curriculum shifts toward more specific, applied topics. Students study abnormal psychology, examining different mental health disorders and how they are treated. They also work in social psychology, exploring how people affect one another and act in groups. They take courses on counselling and psychotherapy that expose them to therapeutic practices and ethical guidelines. They also take classes in psychological testing and assessment, research methods, and statistics. The curriculum evolves to ensure its relevance — recent additions include modules on mental health literacy, positive psychology and the psychology of gender and culture. The learning is very experiential — students don’t learn theories; they use them. They conduct psychological experiments, discuss real-life cases, prepare research reports, and participate in community mental health programs. Through internships with hospitals, schools, counselling centres and nongovernmental organisations, they get practical experience and a taste of what life in the field is like. The aim is to bestow upon graduates not only knowledge of psychology but also empathy, competence, and a willingness to take up mental health awareness and support within society.
