About Shri Shikshayatan College
Shri Shikshayatan College was born from the vision of its Founding Father, Late Sitaramji Seksaria, who saw it as a heartfelt extension of Gandhiji’s nationwide Constructive Programme—dedicated to empowering and uplifting Indian women. It started its inspiring journey with the blessings of Pandit Vidhu Shekhar Shastri, the renowned global scholar of Indian thought and culture, and has since grown steadily to meet the demands of our ever-evolving society.
Founded on July 8, 1955, as a girls' college affiliated with the University of Calcutta, it was established by the Marwari community—a linguistic minority. Today, it's nurtured by the Shikshayatan Foundation (formerly the Marwari Balika Vidyalaya Society, registered under the Societies Registration Act), run purely for education, not profit. Protected under Article 30(1) of the Indian Constitution, it began by focusing on girls from the Marwari community but warmly opened its doors over time to all deserving young women, regardless of caste, creed, religion, or language.
At its heart, the college offers a well-rounded liberal education that nurtures every student's personality, fostering all-round growth and self-reliance. It upholds high academic standards in a peaceful, apolitical space. What truly sets it apart is the beautiful harmony among girls from across India—speaking diverse languages, embracing varied cultures—united in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding.
