About Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE)
The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) is not merely a college, but a breathing part of Indian history. Founded in 1930, it has the distinction of being the oldest research and training institution in Economics in India. The institute was set up by the Servants of India Society, a group established in 1905 by the far-sighted nationalist leader Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Gokhale’s vision was hardly visionary — he felt that an India that had just become independent could only succeed if it had a generation of citizens who were highly educated, but also had the tools to govern and build a just and prosperous society.
This has been the legacy of GIPE for almost a century now since its nascent years as the first institution in India to specialise in economic and social studies. Over the years, it has established a fearsome reputation for its “empirical and analytical research” — in other words, the hard science of figuring out how society and money interact. This extraordinary presence in Indian scholarship was acknowledged by the Government of India and on 29 July1993, under the UGC Act, GIPE received a recognition as a Deemed to be University. The institute remains, even today as it limps through the new age that is 2026, a “crown jewel” of Indian academia still churning out the kind of economists/policymakers who go on to shape our country’s future.
