Highlights The Department of History traces its origin to the very inception of St. Aloysius College in 1968. The department had offered papers at the pre-degree level for the third group till the last batch in 2000. The subject has also been offered as a subsidiary paper to the Economics main at the degree level since 1978. The department has been enriched by the services of Rev. Fr. Antony Thattil (Retired as principal), Shri.E.M.Antony and Dr. Regina Velliyavettil. Currently the department is served by Shri. Melvin Luke George. For the past one decade the department in association with the Economics department has been organizing the annual Thattil Memorial lecture in honor of its former faculty as well as principal, Rev. Fr. Antony Thattil for which, erudite scholars from across India like Prof. M.G.S Narayanan, Dr. Pius Malekandathil and a host of others have delivered the annual history lecture. Apart from the annual lecture, the department also conducts an annual elocution competition in honor of its former faculty, Dr. Regina Velliyavettil. The department also periodically conducts invited talks by eminent personalities both from inside and outside India for the benefit of its students as well as for the larger college community.
St. Aloysius College, Elthuruth, is a first grade college affiliated to the University of Calicut. The journey of St. Aloysius began on 1 June 1968 with a Vision and Mission of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara “to mould intellectually competent, morally upright, socially committed and spiritually inspired individuals”. Rev. Fr. Malachias, the First Manager and Rev. Fr. Adolphus, the first Principal led the institution with resolute dedication. Starting with Pre-degree courses in 1968, St. Aloysius had its first extension with the laying of foundation stone by late Rev. Dr. Clemens, then Provincial and later Bishop of Sagar. It is run by Fathers who belong to the congregation of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) founded by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara . The CMI community of Fathers and Brothers work in various educational institutions and social centres throughout the country and abroad. St. Aloysius College, Elthuruth, is administered by St. Mary’s Monastery, under the Devamatha Province of the congregation. The other institutions in the same campus coming under the administration of the Monastery are St. Aloysius L.P, U.P, High School, Higher Secondary School, St. Aloysius Boarding House, St. Berchmans’ Aspirants House and St. Mary’s Parish Church. Today we have 16 UG and 8 PG courses with Department of English as Research Center. The scholastic achievement of U.G and P.G courses is a true indicator of the high quality education being provided by the college. Now with a teaching staff of 85 members, ministerial staff of 32 members and as many as 2000 students on the roll, we continue our relentless journey.
