About Sacred Heart College
Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Thevara, Kochi, established in 1944 by the CMI Congregation at the Sacred Heart Monastery, began with intermediate and degree programmes in Commerce, Mathematics, and Economics under Madras University, later affiliating with Kerala University (1958) and Mahatma Gandhi University (1983). Founded by Rev. Fr. John Berchmans CMI and Rev. Fr. Francis Sales CMI, it has grown into a premier co-educational institution since admitting women in 1981, now offering 21 UG, 20 PG programmes, one integrated PG, and various diplomas/certificates across three campuses: Lakeview (Main), East, and Media Campus, under Principal Dr. Biju C.S. or Fr. Jose John CMI.
A pioneer in Kerala higher education, it introduced the state's first MSW in 1961 and multiple PhD centres starting with Botany (1990), producing over 120 doctorates by 2020, alongside accolades like consecutive R. Sankar awards (1997, 1999) and MG University sports championships. Accreditations include NAAC Five Star (2000), A Grade Re-accreditations (2007, 2013), and UGC College with Potential for Excellence (2004-2019, ₹3 crore grants); it became autonomous in 2014, ranking #24 (Outlook 2024), #31 (India Today 2024), fostering innovation through departments like Computer Science (BSc 2001), Environment Studies, and Management.
