About us
The Delhi School of Economics (DSE), founded in 1949, was established as a hub for excellence in advanced learning and research in the social sciences. It was led by Professor V.K.R.V. Rao, the visionary Founder-Director, with the Department of Economics at the University of Delhi serving as its foundation. Backed by India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Professor Rao imagined an institution that would not only strengthen research and teaching in economics but also nurture thinkers and leaders who could contribute to India’s economic development and social progress. His vision was to train students in rigorous theory and quantitative methods while also helping them develop a deeper understanding of the social challenges facing the country. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s prayer to serve the poor and the marginalised, which remains inscribed in the Swami Vivekananda Hall at DSE, the institution has always been rooted in the idea of using knowledge as a means to uplift society.
