Delhi School of Economics (DSE)
Founded in 1949, the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) was envisioned as a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the social sciences, with Professor V.K.R.V. Rao as its Founder-Director and the Department of Economics at the University of Delhi as its foundation. Supported by India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Professor Rao imagined an institution that would not only advance research and education in economics but also prepare students to contribute meaningfully to India’s development and social progress. From the beginning, DSE emphasised a combination of rigorous theoretical training, strong quantitative methods, and an awareness of the pressing social issues of the time. Professor Rao drew deep inspiration from Swami Vivekananda’s prayer to serve the poor and downtrodden, a message that remains inscribed in the Swami Vivekananda Hall of the School. This enduring vision continues to guide DSE, reminding every generation of students that education is not only about intellectual growth but also about responsibility and service to society.
