Set up by the Government of Tamil Nadu through an Act of the State legislature [Act No.43 of 1997], the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University was established for advancement and dissemination of learning, teaching and research in the field of law. The University was inaugurated on September 20, 1997-Xvii with President of India, His Excellency Shri. K.R. Narayanan, in the presence of tee Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr Kalaignar Karunanidhi. This established the University and the University came into service on 3rd October 1997. It was named after the Architect of the Indian Constitution Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The University is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the University Grants Commission (UGC). The University also has membership with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Common Wealth Universities, U.K., and Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. There by, this University functions as a Nodal Agency of the Government to uplift legal education in the State of Tamil Nadu. Upon accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a B++ grade, the University achieved that exhausting milestone in 2022. It is the very first full-fledged autonomous an affiliating Law University ever created in India, peculiar from all other Law Universities in India. This University is carrying Legal Education both through this University and its affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu, being the first ever of its kind not only in India but also in South Asia. The legal education is conducted at the University campus and fifteen affiliated government law colleges, one in each of the following locations: Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Pattarai, Perambudur, Pudupakkam, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Dharmapuri, Ramanathapuram, Vellore, Theni, Namakkal, Salem, and Karaikudi of Tamil Nadu. Alongside the Government Law Colleges, the University offers legal education through nine private law colleges located in different parts of Tamil Nadu. The School of Excellence in Law was established by the University in the year 2002 at its campus which has been modeled on the lines of other National Law Schools in the country and offers 3 years as well as 5 year integrated undergraduate courses in Law. The University has also Postgraduate and Research Centre that offers Master of Law Degree Courses in 11 different specializations, doctoral program, as well as organizing research in diverse areas of Law.
