About South Asian University (SAU)
South Asian University (SAU) sprang from a bold vision shared by India's Prime Minister at the 13th SAARC Summit in Dhaka in 2005, proposing that member nations pool their strengths to create a beacon of excellence—a university delivering world-class facilities, expert faculty, and transformative opportunities for students and researchers from every corner of the SAARC region.
Prof. Gowher Rizvi spearheaded the concept paper after wide-ranging consultations, leading to unanimous SAARC approval and an inter-ministerial agreement signed on April 4, 2007, at the 14th Summit in New Delhi. A Project Office launched in 2008 under Prof. GK Chadha, with a SAARC Steering Committee and task forces crafting rules, academics, and business plans—finalized at the 16th Summit in Thimphu 2010. Classes began that August on a temporary JNU campus, shifting to Akbar Bhawan in 2011, and settling into its lush 100-acre permanent home in Maidan Garhi, South Delhi, by January 2023, with India funding construction and SAARC sharing operations.
UGC-recognized across SAARC, SAU champions postgraduate and research-focused programs across 12 science and non-science faculties, plus undergraduate studies, aiming for 5,000 students—mostly from SAARC countries enjoying subsidized fees—and 500 faculty, with up to 20% international hires. A flagship Institute of South Asian Studies will deepen regional ties, drawing diverse talent while funding grows from global institutions and donors to sustain this vibrant hub of innovation and collaboration.
