Highlights The M.Tech programme in Computer Science and Engineering/Artificial Intelligence provides advanced knowledge in various areas of computer science. The programme is designed such that a student can complete it based on advanced coursework alone. However, the students are given the option to concentrate on a problem by substituting some of the courses with equivalent project work. The standard M. Tech. is a two year programme, where the first two semesters are spent doing courses. A one-year project commences in end of the 2nd semester . The project typically has a strong research component.
Games & Sports Facilities
The Institute has a playground measuring 150m X 90m with facility for playing football, Cricket, Hockey, and other games. The institute is also having a Sports Complex for providing various types of outdoor and indoor games to students of this Institute. NIT Silchar also has a hard court for playing basketball and is provided with hard courts for playing Volleyball and Badminton. It has got a Lawn Tennis court within the campus. Overall, the institute has sufficient facilities for games and sports.

A fully computerized full-fledged core-banking branch of State Bank of India operates in the campus. The students, staff and people of the villages surrounding the campus avail the facilities of the branch.

Workshop
The workshop of the Mechanical Engineering Department acts as a Central Workshop of the Institute. It has Machine, Wielding, Fitting, Carpentry, Smithy, Pattern making and foundry shops. The workshop has Centre Lathes, Turret Lathe, Milling machines (horizontal, vertical & universal), Drilling machines (sensitive, polar & radial), Slotting machine, Grinder Pedestal, Surface Grinder M/C , Tools and Cutter Grinder Shaper machine, Planner machine, Power saw, MIG wielding machine, TIG wielding set, Motor Generator wielding set, Wood Turning Lathe, Electric furnace, Thickness Planner, Smithy Hearth furnace, Shearing machine, Grinding machine, Bench Grinder, Sand Reaming machine, Green Hardness Tester, Sheet Bending machine, Hand Punching machine, Plate Bending machine, Sieve analyzer, Permeability tester etc. Common workshop classes are held in the workshop along with workshop classes for higher semester of Mechanical Engineering branch. Different project works for the undergraduate students are also held in the workshop. The workshop is well equipped for the project works of the PG students of the Department. However, continuous efforts are being made to augment the facilities of the workshop commensurate with the change in technology. The workshop is also used for fabrication work for the Institute.
Hostel Facilities
The Institute has got eight Boys hostels and three Girls hostels. During the year under review, construction of 1000-bedded Boys Hostel No-9, 300-bedded PG Boys' Hostel and 100-bedded Married Scholar's Hostel has been taken up. All the hostels have their individual Mess Management Committee to look after the fooding requirement for their boarders.
