About Loyola College (Autonomous)
Loyola College, a Catholic minority institution administered by the Jesuits, was founded in 1925 with the vision of providing university education in a Christian environment to all deserving students, regardless of community or background. When it first opened its doors in July that year, it had just 75 students enrolled in Mathematics, History, and Economics—a modest beginning that, in hindsight, feels almost symbolic of how far it would eventually grow.
Affiliated with the University of Madras, Loyola was granted autonomy in 1978, enabling it to design its own curriculum, evolve its teaching methodologies, and conduct examinations independently, while students continued to receive degrees from the parent university. Over time, its academic offerings expanded significantly to include arts, sciences, commerce, and professional programmes such as the BCA degree course, reflecting the institution’s steady response to changing academic and industry trends.
In 2004, the UGC recognized Loyola as a “College with Potential for Excellence,” a status renewed in 2010, and later elevated it to “College of Excellence” for the period 2014–2019. NAAC further affirmed its standards with an impressive CGPA of 3.70 out of 4.00 in 2012.
Today, Loyola College offers 19 undergraduate and 19 postgraduate programmes, along with 12 specialized institutes, collectively serving more than 12,000 students. Eleven departments conduct M.Phil. programmes, 12 offer PhDs, and a significant proportion—over 40%—of its 286 faculty members hold doctoral degrees. Supported by 182 non-teaching staff, the institution continues to balance its strong Jesuit educational ethos with modern academic expansion, maintaining a campus culture that feels both disciplined and quietly dynamic.
