About University of Calcutta
The University of Calcutta was established on January 24, 1857, after the East India Company had proposed to establish universities in Calcutta, Madras and Bombay in 1854. The university used the example of university of London in its first years before adapting to its system. Rabindranath Tagore was commissioned to compose a university song in 1937 when the then Vice-Chancellor was Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He wrote two songs and nowadays, the official university song is known as Subho Karmapathe Dharo Nirvayo Gaan. The official seal on the university was also altered many times over the years with the one that is currently in place being an elegant variation of what was used previously. The University of Calcutta has a history of several firsts in the academic history of India. It was the pioneer university in Asia east of the Suez that instructed in literature, philosophy, and history, as well as European and Indian subjects. A number of the pioneer institutions joined it, such as the Calcutta Medical College (the first medical school in Asia, 1835), Bethune College (the first women’s college in India, 1879), college of homoeopathy (first in India, 1880), the Science College (1914), and the first blind school in India (1925). It also founded the first university museum in the country the Ashutosh Museum in 1937, as well as sponsored the leading institutions such as the Government Art College (1951) and the Indian Institute of Sanskrit and Business Management (1953), the first management school in India. The university also had many well-known colleges that were affiliated to it during the initial years like the Presidency College, the Medical College, the Hooghly Mohsin College, and the Serampore College.
