About University of Calcutta
The University of Calcutta was founded on January 24, 1857, after the Court of Directors of the East India Company had sent a despatch in 1854 to the effect that universities should be established at Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay. It was first structured after the University of London but over time, it evolved with its own structure. Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the Vice-Chancellor during this period, in 1937, where he asked Rabindranath Tagore to make a song of the university. Tagore composed two songs- Chalo Jai, Chalo Jai and Subho Karmapathe Dharo Nirvayo Gaan. Although the former was sung by students in a parade the same year, the latter was then taken as the official university song in their Post-Centenary Golden Jubilee.
The seal of the University has also undergone a number of changes ever since its inception. The 1857 seal was altered when India was made part of the British Crown with numerous designs being tested throughout the years before reaching the current form, which is a replica of seal six. The university of calcutta has made several firsts over the decades. It was the pioneer university of the eastern side of the Suez to educate such subjects as European Classics, English Literature, Philosophy and History. It was also the sister school to the first medical school in Asia, Calcutta Medical College (1835) and the first women college in India, Bethune College (1879).
It was also the first institution to open the first homeopathy college in the country (1880), Science College (1914), blind school (1925), the country first university museum (1937), Government Art College (1951), and the first management institute in India, which is IISWBM (1953). The university also enjoyed good affiliations network of early colleges such as Presidency College, Bethune College, Calcutta Medical College, Bengal Engineering College (now BESU), Hooghly Mohsin College, Krishnagar College, and Serampore College. These connections demonstrate how the University of Calcutta was transformed into a pillar of the modern Indian higher education and influenced academic traditions and institutions in the country.
