Initially founded by James Thomason, the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces, its primary objective was to train officers and surveyors involved in constructing the Ganges Canal. Following Thomason's passing and the completion of the canal in 1854, Proby Cautley, the canal's designer, renamed the institution as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering. In 1949, it was rebranded as the University of Roorkee and eventually earned the status of an Indian Institute of Technology in 2001, becoming IIT Roorkee.
