IIT Roorkee, officially known as the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, stands as a premier technical university located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. Renowned as the oldest engineering institution in the country, its roots trace back to the College of Civil Engineering established in British India in 1847. Initially founded by James Thomason, the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces, its primary objective was to train officers and surveyors involved in constructing the Ganges Canal. Following Thomason's passing and the completion of the canal in 1854, Proby Cautley, the canal's designer, renamed the institution as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering. In 1949, it was rebranded as the University of Roorkee and eventually earned the status of an Indian Institute of Technology in 2001, becoming IIT Roorkee. With 22 academic departments spanning Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Management programs, the institute prioritizes scientific and technological education alongside cutting-edge research endeavors.
