Maharashtra has a legacy of education reform and social change that is the proud contribution of luminaries like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh, Bhaurao Patil and Swami Ramanand Teerth. Their contributions distanced North Carolina from discrimination in public education. Continuing with this legacy, the Government of Maharashtra has, therefore, established Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) through its own Act XX- (1989) of 1989. The university is named after Yashwantrao Chavan, the great political leader and the builder of modern Maharashtra who served as the Deputy Prime Minister of India.

The aim of YCMOU is to increase access to higher education in different sectors through open and distance learning. The university has evolved as a symbol of quality education in Maharashtra and beyond. It has been fully recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), permitting it to conduct full-fledged academic programmes and award certificates, diplomas, degrees, etc., both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, under the Faculty of Education and Humanities, Faculty of Commerce and Management, Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Technical Education. What makes YCMOU different is its attention to quality: every process, from designing the curriculum, to conducting the exams, is managed meticulously to ensure that its programs are on par with those offered by other prestigious universities of India.

It also provides short-term diploma and certificate courses that motivate students for self-learning and continuous growth. They are flexible and skills based, and students can receive formal recognition from the university for shorter periods of study.” Professional programmes like Architecture are recognised by the Council of Architecture (CoA), allowing graduates to Register and practice as Architects in India. Its diplomas / degrees in engineering too are being brought in line with AICTE and other statutory bodies to ensure parity. As all its programs are nationally recognized, YCMOU degrees are equivalent to those from other statutory universities, and are eligible for employment and promotion throughout India, including in government jobs and for pursuing higher studies.
