The Delhi School of Economics (DSE) was founded in 1949 as a centre for excellence in advanced learning and research in the social sciences, with Professor V.K.R.V. Rao as its first Director and the Department of Economics at the University of Delhi as its foundation. Professor Rao, supported by India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, dreamed of creating an institution that would not only push the boundaries of research and teaching in economics but also prepare students to contribute meaningfully to India’s growth and social progress. His vision was to nurture young minds with a strong foundation in theory and quantitative methods, while also encouraging them to think deeply about the social issues facing the country.
The inspiration behind DSE was rooted in service to society, and Professor Rao drew guidance from a famous prayer of Swami Vivekananda, which is inscribed in the Swami Vivekananda Hall at DSE. The prayer speaks of dedicating oneself to the upliftment of the poor, the downtrodden, and the marginalised as a form of true worship. This ethos continues to shape the spirit of the Delhi School of Economics, reminding students and scholars alike that education is not just about knowledge, but also about responsibility and service to humanity.
