The Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management (IISWBM) is a self-governing graduate business school situated in Kolkata, India. It holds the distinction of being the first institute in India to confer an MBA degree. The institute's origins can be traced back to 1942 when, during the Second World War, the British government sought qualified labor officers for its ordnance factories. To address this need, a social welfare training institute affiliated with Calcutta University was established in close proximity. Dijendra Kumar Sanyal assumed the role of its chief.
Following Independence, this institution evolved into IISWBM, officially founded in April 1953, with Dijendra Kumar Sanyal as its founder-director. Its primary objective was to advance management education.
The MBA, MHRM, and MPSM courses at IISWBM are autonomous while being affiliated with the University of Calcutta. The MBA program has held affiliation with the university for over six decades. Notably, IISWBM served as a mentoring institute for the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM C), and the Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad.
In 2003, IISWBM celebrated its Golden Jubilee, and to mark the occasion, the Government of India issued a commemorative stamp in honor of the institute.
