Highlights DM Cardiology is a three-year-long postgraduate course that deals with disorders of the human heart as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The department of Cardiology was amongst the first departments established in late 1987. Currently, the department has a whole range of facilities for diagnosing and treating all varieties of cardiac diseases. Besides necessary equipments, the department has two active cardiac catheterization laboratories and is amongst the top 10 large volume centers in the country actively involved in both pediatric and adult cardiac interventions including coronary interventions and coronary angioplasties, balloon valvuloplasties and interventions for congenital heart disease and peripheral vascular diseases.
The foundation stone of the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences was laid on December 14, 1980 in the present King Georges Medical University campus by the then President of India His Excellency, Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. The State Government aimed to create a state-of-the-art quality medical education, training, medicalcare and cutting-edge research institution with the motto, "Hospitals with a long tradition of excellence have demonstrated abundantly that research enhances the vitality of teaching, teaching lifts the standards ofservice and service opens new avenues of investigation".
Over the years, looking into the needs of patients, the departments of Critical Care Medicine, Hematology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Pediatric Surgical subspecialty were started. Under the scheme of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Sewa Yojna, the departments of Plastic Surgery, Maternal & Reproductive Health, Pulmonary Medicine, Molecular Medicine & Biotechnology, Opthalmology and Neonatology were developed.
The Telemedicine program was initiated in the Institute in the year 1999 to promote the concept of telesurgical education, using interactive video conferencing technology. The School of Telemedicine & Biomedical Informatics was established in the year 2006 which is the only center of its kind in the country.
The Institute has trained over 1000 medical graduates and postgraduates in broad and sub specialties who are working in the different parts of the country and abroad. The Week magazine, some time ago, rated SGPGIMS as being amongst the top 10 Medical Institutions of the country.The Institute has also been designated as the nodal centre for the National Organ Procurement and Transplant Network program of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India under the National Transplant Act. Indira Gandhi National Open University and the Ministry of Health, Government of India have designated SGPGIMS as a program study centre for dialysis training as a part of the National Transplant Program. The Institute has also been represented in the Planning Commission and the Medical Council of India.
In SGPGIMS, excellence is a way of life. Although continually inundated with patients in need of medical care, it strives to cope with and improve its services to the community. In the foreseeable future, it must innovate and strive hard to retain its place amongst the top medical institutes of India.
