M.Sc in Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics at NIST University has been a cornerstone of the institution since day one. What began as a department supporting engineering education has now evolved into a vibrant hub of learning and research, with 15 highly accomplished faculty members—all holding Doctorate or Post-Doctorate degrees from top institutions across India and abroad.
In 2017, the department took a big step forward by launching the M.Sc. Mathematics program. Led by a passionate and research-driven team, this program has opened doors for students to dive deeper into advanced mathematics while also building a strong research foundation.
Today, the department is recognized for its quality teaching, student mentorship, and impactful research. Faculty members guide Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, publish in leading journals, collaborate with academic and research institutions, and secure prestigious research grants from organizations like SERB (DST) and NBHM (DAE).
Honoring Ramanujan: National Mathematics Day 2023
On December 22, 2023, the department came alive with the celebration of National Mathematics Day. Themed “A Tribute to S. Ramanujan,” the event featured a national seminar and an exciting quiz competition, “Ramanujan’s Riddle.”
Dr. Purna Chandra Biswal (PMEC) graced the event as Chief Guest, with insightful talks by Dr. Brundaban Sahu (NISER Bhubaneswar) and Dr. Prem Prakash Pandey (IISE Berhampur), who shared their reflections on Ramanujan’s profound impact on mathematics.
Dr. Bishnukar Nayak (Vice Principal, NIST) set the tone with a warm welcome and tribute to Ramanujan, followed by Er. Sayad Suleman Ali (Head of HR & Admin), who spoke about the relevance of mathematical thinking in today’s world.
The day saw enthusiastic participation from students across nearby colleges, especially in the quiz competition, where they showed off their math skills and took home some well-deserved prizes. It was a perfect blend of inspiration, learning, and celebration.
Upskilling Educators: FDP on Python Programming (August 2024)
From August 2 to 6, 2024, the department organized a Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Python Programming, aimed at helping educators strengthen their coding skills and bring technology into their classrooms and research.
The sessions were led by Dr. Venkateswara Rao Tirumalasetty, Advisor at Web Synergies (Singapore), who brought his global expertise to the sessions through hands-on training and real-world applications of Python.
Over five enriching days, participants explored how Python can be applied in engineering, management, science, and research. The program received a great response and gave faculty the tools and confidence to bring programming into their academic toolkit.
