About Hindu College, Delhi
Hindu College, established in 1899 by Late Shri Krishna Dassji Gurwale in Kinari Bazar, Chandni Chowk, has grown from a modest boarding house into one of India’s most prestigious institutions. Initially founded with the help of Delhi’s prominent citizens, the College moved in 1908 to a new campus in Kashmiri Gate, where a hostel was also constructed. From its inception, Hindu College was deeply intertwined with India’s freedom movement—its trustees and students actively participated in the Swadeshi and boycott movements, with revolutionary figures like Master Ameer Chand among its early board members. The College transitioned to the University of Delhi in 1922 and pioneered democratic student governance with its unique College Parliament. Over the decades, Hindu College has welcomed historic visits by leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Pt. Nehru, while his students played key roles in the national movement, including during the Quit India and Non-Cooperation campaigns. With continued academic excellence, infrastructure development, and active student engagement, the College moved to its current 25-acre campus in 1953. It has since grown to include science blocks, a renowned auditorium, hostels, a strong placement cell, and numerous vibrant student societies. In recent years, the College has secured top national rankings across streams, signed global academic MoUs, and launched new initiatives like industry-academia collaborations and the Vidya Vistar Scheme. Even during the pandemic, it adapted swiftly to online learning and community outreach. Today, Hindu College stands as a symbol of academic brilliance, progressive values, and nation-building, carrying forward its rich legacy into the future.
