Life at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) can be aptly described as a “changing combination of experiencing and living with innovation underscored by Nature.” Students usually describe the experience as not limited to classroom education — they get to roam through fields of crops so massive that they can read and interact with pioneering biologists, and truly understand the hands-on farming that affects the lives of actual farmers. The serene campus provides a perfect environment for young minds to grow. It is, among the few places in Amravati, one of the few places where facilities are on par with those of major institutions in India. Many students enjoy the hands-on approach, whether studying the nutritional value of pearl millet or understanding integrated farming systems that enable farmers to become self-sufficient. The mess food is known for being nutritious, and the hostel has a comfortable, homely atmosphere, with friendships and long-lasting relationships forming among the residents. The harsh winters and hot summers make it challenging for me to work there. Still, the students feel invigorated and supported by this environment, which drives them to find new ways to innovate for agricultural growth and rural development. It’s a place where science intersects with heart — and students pursuing a master of science degree emerge as experts not only in research, but also in compassion for the future of India’s agriculture.
