Highlights The Department of Mass Communication and Videography of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata was established in 1996 under the aegis leadership Fr. George Ponodoth and the legendary figure Fr. Gaston Roberge. Since then, the department has seen the involvement of many faculty members who are academic as well as professional experts. The syllabus accommodates theoretical and practical engagements in the various wings of Audiography, Videography, Editing, Script Writing, Visual Culture, Photography, Media and Cultural studies, Sound designing, Cinema Studies, TV Production, Editing, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Media Ethics and Mass Communication theories. Students are required to undertake a dissertation in their final semester which introduces them to the world of academic research and publication. Students also produce a degree film in their final year and many of the films have made a mark at various national and international film festivals. The students who graduate from this course enrol in reputed film schools, management schools, or pursue higher studies from all over India and abroad. Reputed institutes like Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata, Xavier’s Institute of Communication, Mumbai, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Delhi and Dhenkanal, Asian College Of Journalism, Chennai, London School of Economics and other media institutes in Canada, Ireland and London, see a regular flow of students from this department who go there for further specialization. Many students work with reputed institutions like NDTV, CNN-IBN, Times Now and various film and ad production houses all over the country. The department is also offering Mass Communication as a generic elective paper, where students from other disciplines can apply. The department has state of the art equipment for the students, such as Teleprompters, Multi camera set up with talk back facility, switchers, HD cameras, Sound Lab and Edit Lab. The students have direct access to them and gain professional experience through the industry standard equipment.

A host of seven Belgian Jesuits arrived at Calcutta in November 1859, under the leadership of Fr. H. Depelchin (Rector: 1860-1871), in the Founding Father of the second St. Xavier’s, They shifted St. Xavier’s from Chowringhee to the Sans Souci Theatre in January 1860, which is now the honest home of learned professors and zealous students.
With one hundred and sixty three years of service to the nation, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, has grown today into a leading educational institution in India. Both St. Xavier’s School and College are proud of their contribution to the cause of education and culture in Bengal for 163 years. These twin institutions have produced many great educationists and students who earned regard and respect for their Alma Mater.
Fr. E. Lafont was appointed Rector in October 1871, He was a gifted teacher of physics. The terrible cyclone of November 1864 proved the begging of his fame. The catastrophe might have been much greater, had not Fr. Lafont signaled the timely warning.
It was Fr. O’Neill (Rector: 1904-1913) who gave the College its crest and the motto: Nihil Ultra, a motto, significant and suggestive of a noble ideal, of an unconquerable hope, that urges the Xaverian to a consistent quest for the higher.
