Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the National Institutes of Technology in the country. The Govt. Government of India as an Institute of National importance under the UGC Act and was awarded the status of the Deemed University on 26th June 2002. Subsequently, the Central Govt. Declared as Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament (NIT 2007 which declared 20 Institutes including VNIT). The implementation of the Act commenced on August 15, 2007.
Previously, the Institute was the Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). It was founded in the 1960 years by Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra. The college was established in June 1960 by merging the State Govt. College of Engineering operative at Nagpur since its inception in July 1956. The meeting that took place in October 1962, the Governing Board of the College agreed to name the college as Sir M.Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering, as a remembrance to the great leader, engineer and a statesman of the country.
The main goal behind the setting-up of Regional Engineering Colleges was to ensure technical education of high standards throughout the country which would promote national integration. The College was established in the year 1960 in the precincts of Govt. Polytechnic, Sadar, Nagpur and later on 214 acres had been acquired at the present location to start an independent Regional Engineering College.
