The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is the one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology in the country. The Govt. of India on the Institute with the status of the an Institution of National Importance (a national level institute) through an Act of Parliament on August 09, 2007. Subsequently, the Central Govt. under the NIT Act 2007 They were granted Institute of National Importance status. The Amendment Act became effective from 15th August 2007.
The institute was previously known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). It was founded in 1960 under the Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra. Establishment The college was established in June 1960 by merging the State Govt. College of Engineering Working at Nagpur since July 1956. In the meeting on 15 October 1962, of the Governing Board of the College, it was decided to name the College after the illustrious engineer, planner, and statesman of the country Sir M.Visvesvaraya.
The major thrust to set up the Regional Engineering Colleges was to provide high quality technical education throughout the country and to bring about regional integration. Establishment and Growth of College The College was started in 1960 in a camp office in Govt. Polytechnic, Sadar Nagpur (now with the site of Civil Lines Police Station) and then a campus of 214 acres by VMV College at the current location, to house an independent Regional Engineering College.
