VJTI is an autonomous institution established in 1887 and is one of Asia's oldest engineering colleges. Admission to VJTI is strictly based on merit and is conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra. Lateral entry programs are available at universities and engineering colleges. These programs allow students who have completed a 3-year diploma in Engineering or B.Sc. degree to directly get admitted in the second year. To qualify, students must have at least 50% marks and Mathematics as a compulsory subject in Class XII.
Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute
Founded in 1887 Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute and it was begun with two departments Sir J J School of Mechanical Engineering in 1896 and the Ripon Textile School in 1903.5 for the Mechanical and Textile Industries respectively which were established to meet the growing needs of India.
Courses in Electrical Engineering were added as the first step in the growth of the Institute in 1903. In 1906 the Technical & Applied Chemistry Department was established and the Department of Sanitary Engineering was formed in 1913. The institute was designated the Central Technological Institute of Bombay Province by G. R. No. 1850 of 27th June 1913. In its initial years, the institute at Byculla was accommodated in a building granted for the purpose by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit.
In 1923, post-First World War, the Institute relocated to its current location in Matunga. Aside from Sir Petit, the liberal grants were made by the Government and the Bombay Mill Owners’ Association. A further block of northern light roof type construction was erected in 1931 to house the textile machinery and equipment etc. secured through the good offices of Sir Ness Wadia.
The courses were, Bachelor of Degree in Textile, Bachelor of Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Degree in Electrical Engineering introduced in 1946,1947 and 1949 respectively. "Very important indeed has been the contribution of Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute in the establishment of the IITs from 1955 to 60." Prof. Kelkar, founder director of IIT Kanpur and planning officer of IIT Bombay was Electrical Engineering faculty VJTI. Prof SenGupto, founder director of IIT Madras, he was the principal of VJTI.
