Academic Qualifications:
12th Standard or Equivalent: Candidates must have passed Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English as separate subjects, and a PCM average of not less than 60%.
Lateral Entry (2nd Year Admission): a. Candidates who have passed the 1st year training under the Alternate Training Scheme approved by D.G. Shipping can join the 2nd year. b. Candidates with a 1st-year completion from an Engineering College in streams such as Mechanical or Electrical, approved by AICTE, with at least 60% average marks, are eligible for 2nd-year admission. c. Candidates holding a 3-year Diploma in Mechanical/Marine/Electrical/Electrical and Electronics from AICTE or State Board of Technical Education colleges, with at least 55% aggregate marks in the final year, are eligible for the 2nd year. d. Candidates with a 4-year Diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering from AICTE or State Board of Technical Education colleges, with at least 55% aggregate marks in the final year, can join the 2nd year. e. Candidates holding a 3-year Diploma in specific streams (listed below), from AICTE or State Board of Technical Education colleges with at least 55% aggregate marks in the final year, can join the 2nd year:
Mechanical Engineering Stream: Automobile, Machine Tools, Maintenance, Plant Engineering, Production Technology, Production Engineering, Advanced Diploma in Tool and Die Making.
Electrical Engineering Stream: Electrical Power System.
Electrical & Electronics Engineering Stream: Digital Electronics, Electronics and Communications, Electronics & Telecommunication, Industrial Electronics, Electronics Production & Maintenance, Instrumentation, Instrumentation & Control.
English Language Requirement: Candidates must have secured at least 50% marks in English in 10th or 12th Standard or in the Degree/Diploma course conducted by a recognized Board or University.

The candidate must have passed 10th and 12th standards from a recognized board.
Candidates are exempt from appearing in part 'A' of both MEO Class-IV and MEO Class-II grade examinations.
A 5% relaxation in English marks is available for candidates who are native to Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and belong to Scheduled Tribes of those islands, with both parents born there.
