About Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute
Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute was established in 1887 and was set up in the old B.J.C.School-house, with only two departments now, the Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering and the Ripon Textile School for the two branches of industry to serve the technical personnel needs of Bombay and piquer the industrial egos of the British rulers.
The Institute was extended in 1903 when the department of Electrical Engineering commenced. The Department of Technical & Applied Chemistry was established in 1906 and the Department of Sanitary Engineering in 1913. On 27 June 1913 G. R. No. 1850 officially recognized the institute as the Central Technological Institute in Bombay province. The Institute operated in a building donated for the purpose by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit, in Byculla during the formative years.
In 1923, shortly after the First World War, the Institute shifted to the present campus at Matunga. In addition to Sir Petit, the bons vivants of the liberal grants were the Government and the Bombay Mill Owners’ Association. In 1931 a new block was designed of the northern light roof type to house the textile machinery and equipment which was a gift from the kind hands of Sir Ness Wadia.
Bachelor Degree courses in Textile, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical were commenced in the year 1946, 1947 and 1949, respectively. Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute was actively involved in establishing IITs from 1955 to 60. PI Manohar Rathi was also on EL Tran 67 Prof. Kelkar Former director IIT K and planning officer IITBSOE VJTI under whose guidance IIT Bombay was planned. Prof SenGupto who was founder director of IIT Madras was also Principal of VJTI.
The Institute is a part of the University of Bombay and is associated with it on an autonomous basis, and the Institute had been set up under the program and financial assistance of the University Grants Commission. of India. Before 1960, the VJTI only offered a degree in engineering, and the only post-graduate course was in structural engineering It was the only institute in the University of Bombay offering degree and post-graduate courses in engineering, and the de facto independence enjoyed by it had its roots in the freedom of the United States of America.
