About Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute
Established in 1887 (VJTI Memorandum of Association), the growth of the Institute began in 1903 with the advent of Electrical Engineering courses. The Technical & Applied Chemistry Department came in 1906 and the Department of Sanitary Engineering in 1913. By G R No 1850 dated 27 June 1913, CST was recognised as Central Provinces and Berar‘C.P. and Berar is now Water Resources Department (WRD) Government engineering college of repute. The early years saw the institute being located in Byculla in a building contributed for the purpose by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit.
Post World War I, the Institute was shifted to Matunga in 1923. In addition to Sir Petit the liberality of the grants was due to grants on the part of Government and the Bombay Mill Owners’ Association. In 1931 a further block of northern light roof type construction was added to houses the textile machinery and equipment, all of which was donated through the good offices of Sir Ness Wadia.
Between 1946 and 1949 the Bachelor Degree courses in Textile, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering were initiated. A very important contribution made by the VJTI was to support the establishment of the IITs from 1955-1960. Prof. Kelkar, the IIT Kanpur founder director and planning officer of IIT Bombay was VJTI Electrical Engg. faculty. Prof SenGupto founding director of IIT madras was the principal of VJTI.
The Institute is an affiliated to the University of Bombay and was amongst the first fourteen colleges that were established in India by the Government of India, and was the only Sardar Patel College out of these founder fourteen colleges. of India. Before 1960 Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute was the Institutes from which the University of Bombay conducted degree and post graduate courses in Engineering and functioned as de facto department of the University of Bombay.
