Highlights The Department started three year M.C.A. program during 1987-1988, which is being conducted until now. From 1995 to 2006 Dr. P. Thangvel was Head in-charge of the department. In the year 1998, it also started Ph.D. program in Computer Science. Further the department conducted M.Phil. program during 2000-2001. Again, the M.Phil. course was revived in the year 2003-2004 and it is being continued. From 2006 to till date Prof. P. Thangavel is the Professor and Head of the department. The department has also started M.Sc. Computer Science (self-supportive) program in the academic year 2006-2007. The M.C.A program has been restructured as a two year program since the academic year 2020-21. The department is engaged in training Post Graduate students and Research Scholars. The active research areas of the department are Algorithms and Artificial Systems, Computer Graphics, Digital Image Processing, Neural Networks, Data Mining and Bigdata Analytics.

Eligibility Criteria for MCA at University of Madras
a) BCA/BES/BSc.-Computer Science/ Mathematics /Applied Sciences/ Physics/ Statistics.
b)B.Com. / B.B.M. /B.B.A./ B.L.M. /.B.A. Corporate Secretary ship / B.A. Economics /any other degree with Business Mathematics and Statistics or Mathematics/ Statistics in Main/Allied level.
c) B.Sc. Chemistry with Mathematics and Physics and Physics as allied subject.
d) B.E./ B.Tech. / M.B.A. or e) Bachelors degree in any discipline with Mathematics as one of the subjects at the Higher Secondary level
