About Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute
Established in 1887 Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute the first academic institute in India to offer a degree in mechanical engineering was the VJTI (Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering).[2] Developed over 3 acres of land,[3] with a built up area of 125, 000 sq. ft. VJTI is located in the central suburb of Mumbai i.e. Matunga, and also has an extensio faculty at Hyderabad.
The first step in the development of the Institute was made in 1903, when commenced the courses in Electrical Engineering. Technical & Applied Chemistry was added in 1906, and Sanitary Engineering in 1913. Through G. R. No. 1850 dated 27 June 1913, the institute was recognized at the Central Technological Institute of Bombay Province. In the first instance, the Institute was situated at Byculla in a building given by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit.
The Institute was shifted due to lack of space and a new move was made to the present campus at Matunga, in 1923. In addition to Sir Petit, the liberal grants were made by the Government and the Bombay Mill Owners’ Association. In 1931 a new dock of northern light roof type was constructed to house the textile machinery and plant acquired through the good offices of Sir Ness Wadia.
Batchelor Degree courses in Textile, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering were introduced in 1946, 1947 and 1949 respectively. Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute has had the proud privilege of having IITs to be set up during the years 1955–60. They had with them Prof. Kelkar, the founder Director of IIT Kanpur and the planning Officer of IIT Bombay, who was Electrical Engineer from VJTI. Prof SenGupto who was founder director of IIT Madras was Principal of VJTI.
The Institute has been connected to the Bombay University and was one of the fourteen tea colleges to be upgraded into Post-Graduate Institutes on receiving grant-in-aid from the Govt. of India. Before 1960, Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, had the privilege of being the only Institute in Bombay that offered degree and post graduation level courses in Engineering under the University of Bombay and its degrees have the equivalent status of the ones from IITs.
In 1997, the college was renamed from its original name Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute to Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute.
